Lounge Luau Summer Reading Kickoff, June 21st, 2008
It’s never too early to think about summer! Our TAC is hard at work planning the first-ever, teens-only Summer Reading Kickoff at the Main Library. (There will still be a Summer Reading kickoff for the little kids, so if you love clowns, that’s your party!)
The kickoff, which takes place on the first official day of summer, will be a Luau theme to celebrate our “beach-y” summer theme, “Will You Lounge This Summer?” Naturally, there will be games, activities, food, prizes, and lots of fun!
TAC is hard at work planning fun & excitement for the big event. If you have a suggestion for the Luau, please send it to Jessica at jsharper@wicomico.org and it will be shared with the TAC.
Twilight Party
To celebrate the August 2nd release of Breaking Dawn, the TAC will be planning a Twilight party. Much like the Harry Potter parties of the past, this one will be full of costumes, prizes, and refreshments, but UNLIKE the Harry Potter parties, this event will be TEENS ONLY. You can dress like your favorite character and we will have plenty of Twilight series-themed fun. We hope it will be a huge success!
If you have a suggestion for the Twilight party, send it to Jessica at jsharper@wicomico.org and it will be shared with the TAC.
Banned Books Week, September 29 th – October 6 th
Celebrate your intellectual freedom this week! The 15-year-old observance of Banned Books Week is something that libraries hold dear. If you value our democratic rights in this country and you want to continue to have access to materials, support your local library during this important celebration!
Has a banned or challenged book rocked your world? Do you even know what books have been banned or challenged? Check out the ALA (American Library Association) web site http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.htm
for more information. You might be surprised to know that some of your favorite authors and books have been called “obscene,” “pornographic,” and “unfit for children.” Read what some of our TAC members have to say about their favorite challenged books.
The Main Library is hosting a Banned & Challenged Books and Authors Scavenger Hunt for teens! Any teen between the ages of 12 – 18 may enter. Think you know your books and authors well enough to try it out? Answer each question correctly and qualify for a chance to win a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card! Entry forms may be obtained at the Main Library. Contest entries must be received at the Children’s Desk in the Main Library no later than close of business on October 6th.
